STEM ACTIVITY PLANNING - Cernica Middle School 1, Romania
Teacher: Gabriela Osborn
Problems found:
Our schoolyard is very small, it lacks a playground and it has very small patches of dirt. Over the rough winter, all the flowers in this small garden dry up and die.
SOLUTION: In order to make our small schoolyard prettier, we planted flowers, some of them being annuals and some perennials. We talked about the difference between these types of plants.
Our classrooms didn’t have any relaxation corners because of the Covid restrictions.
SOLUTİON: Now that the restrictions are lifted, we organized a quiet library corner, with comfortable bean bags and all our favorite storybooks.
Our windows are overlooking the backyards of some residential homes. We needed to improve the view.
SOLUTION: We organized a flower design workshop and made big flower arrangements for every window, in order to bring the colors of spring inside our classrooms and improve the view.
We watched different videos about the ergonomics of educational spaces. The children need to be made aware that a beautiful space takes resources to build and therefore needs to be kept with great care and maintained. We also talked about the Japanese schools, where students do all the cleaning and caring, there are no janitors in Japanese schools. Hopefully, this activity brought the necessary awareness about the importance of not only investing in a beautiful, exciting, relaxing, and stimulating classroom but also in maintaining and taking good care of everything in a classroom and school.
